Discover the Benefits of Shockwave Therapy in Charlotte at TruMotion Therapy

If you’re an active adult struggling with chronic pain or a nagging injury that just won’t go away, shockwave therapy might be the game-changing treatment you’ve been looking for. At TruMotion Therapy in Charlotte, we specialize in focused shockwave therapy-a highly effective, non-invasive technique that stimulates your body’s natural healing response and helps you recover faster.

The Science Behind Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy, a type of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), was first used in the 1980s to break up kidney stones. Since then, it has evolved to treat various musculoskeletal and soft tissue conditions.

This state-of-the-art method uses a wand that produces acoustic sound waves and energy to stimulate cellular repair and reduce inflammation at the source of pain. It effectively promotes more rapid recovery, enabling those who undergo treatments to put pain and inflammation in the past.

This treatment is safe, non-invasive, and proven to relieve the pain and discomfort. Plus, its non-surgical nature has made it increasingly popular among those looking for alternatives to other pain management options.

Conditions We Treat with Shockwave Therapy

At TruMotion Therapy, we use focused shockwave therapy to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including but not limited to:

Plantar fasciitis
– Back Pain
Frozen shoulder
Achilles Tendinitis
– Sports injuries
Knee osteoarthritis
– and more!

Whether you’re training for a race, staying active in the gym, or just want to enjoy your daily life without pain, shockwave therapy can help you move forward with confidence.

What to Expect During a Shockwave Session

You may feel some mild soreness or pressure during the session, which is actually a good sign- it means we have targeted the correct area. Most patients tolerate the treatment well. Sessions are typically short, lasting around 10-15 minutes.

We generally recommend a series of 4-6 treatments, depending on the severity of the condition and how long it has been present. Many patients start to notice improvements within just a few visits.

Shockwave Therapy

Is All Shockwave the Same?

Not all shockwave therapy is created equal. At TruMotion Therapy, we utilize both focused and radial shockwave devices to provide customized treatment plans based on your specific needs and condition.

Focused vs. Radial Shockwave

Focused shockwave therapy is designed to target deep tissues such as joints, cartilage, and tendons. During treatment, focused shockwave is only felt over injured tissue. Nothing is felt when treating over healthy tissue. This allows us to be confident we are treating the precise area of concern. This type of shockwave is a powerful tool in regenerative medicine, helping to:

  • Stimulate cellular repair

  • Increase blood flow

  • Promote long-term healing

Radial shockwave therapy, on the other hand, disperses energy more broadly and is ideal for treating superficial tissues. It’s particularly effective at:

  • Reducing muscle tension

  • Relieving general pain and tightness

  • Enhancing mobility

The TruMotion Difference

At TruMotion, we use shockwave devices from Storz Medical, a Swiss manufacturer known as the gold standard in shockwave therapy. These are the same devices used in most clinical trials, ensuring you receive the most evidence-based and effective treatment available.

Unlike many clinics that delegate shockwave treatments to a technician, all of our shockwave sessions are performed by our physicians who have been trained through The Academy of Shockwave Excellence. This ensures:

  • Expert-level precision

  • Real-time clinical decision-making

  • Treatments that are tailored to your unique pathology

Whether you’re recovering from a chronic tendon issue, joint pain, or muscular strain, our dual shockwave approach helps restore movement, relieve pain, and accelerate healing.

Patient Success Stories

John M. – Plantar Fasciitis

John is a tennis instructor who was struggling with plantar fasciitis. He had been through physical therapy and a round of radial shockwave with no improvement. He began treatment at our clinic and was educated on the difference between focused and radial shockwave therapy. After 6 treatments of combined focused and radial shockwave he was back to teaching tennis pain-free.

Ike T. – Knee Arthritis

Ike is an active adult with osteoarthritis in both knees causing him pain when he walks. He was told he would likely need a knee replacement. Unsatisfied with that option, he sought alternative forms of care. Ike began our Non-Surgical Knee Replacement Protocol, which relies heavily on shockwave therapy and movement based training. He has since been able to walk and enjoy travel with his family without knee pain.

Megan H. – Hamstring Strain

Megan is an elite level distance runner who suffered a hamstring strain while training for a marathon. Knowing time was of the essence, she wanted a treatment that would get her back to running ASAP. After 4 sessions of shockwave therapy she was able to run pain-free and go sub-3 hours in her marathon

FAQs

What conditions can shockwave therapy treat?

Shockwave therapy effectively treats plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, shoulder calcific tendonitis, patellar tendonitis (jumper’s knee), hip bursitis, spine pain and chronic muscle trigger points. This non-invasive treatment is particularly effective for chronic musculoskeletal conditions that haven’t responded to traditional therapies.

How does shockwave therapy work for pain relief?

Shockwave therapy uses pulsed sound waves to stimulate healing by promoting blood flow, breaking down scar tissue, and stimulating the body’s natural repair mechanisms. The treatment promotes new blood vessel formation and accelerates tissue regeneration, providing long-lasting pain relief for chronic conditions.

How many shockwave sessions do I need?

We typically recommend 3 to 6 sessions depending on the chronicity of the complaint. An issue that has been around for a longer period of time will require more treatments to achieve lasting relief.

Is shockwave painful and what are the side-effects?

There is typically some mild discomfort during a shockwave therapy session. This sensation ensures the treatment is targeting the appropriate area. Since each person has a different tolerance, the treatment is adjusted to your comfort level. Many patients enjoy the sensation stating the therapy is “hitting the exact right spot!”

Side-effects are minimal and are limited to some local soreness following the treatment.

What is the difference between focused and radial shockwave?

Focused shockwave is a regenerative therapy that helps repair damaged tissue by stimulating stem cell activity and promoting the formation of new blood vessels. This therapy is aimed directly at the main area of concern. The treatment beam is very thin can penetrate quite deep. Interestingly, the therapy is typically not felt when applied to healthy tissue. It is only felt when targeting an area of concern.

Radial shockwave alleviates pain by breaking down scar tissue and improving mobility. Compared to focused shockwave, radial targets a more broad, superificial treatment area.

In our clinic, we use a combination of focused and radial shockwave with 90% of our cases.

How does shockwave compare to injections or surgery?

Shockwave therapy has been found to provide greater improvements in pain and tissue health when compared to corticosteroid injections for conditions like plantar fasciitis. Corticosteroid injections offer quick but often temporary results. Shockwave therapy typically requires a few treatments, but the results are longer lasting.

The decision whether or not to get an injection or surgery will ultimately be up to you and your physician, but most providers support a conservative approach like shockwave therapy before attempting more invasive procedures.
