AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill in Charlotte, NC

AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill

Being active and participating in recreational activities is one of the best things you can do for your mind and body. Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are or how much you stretch, injuries can happen. You may sprain an ankle going for a tennis ball or develop runners knee while training for a marathon. These injuries can be nagging, and taking time away from the activity you love may seem like the only way to truly get better. Cue cinematic music… until now!

At TruMotion Therapy you can recover faster without losing fitness by using the AlterG Anti-Gravity treadmill. By reducing impact forces the AlterG allows you to run normally without over-stressing your body. The pressurized chamber that surrounds your lower body gently unweights you by as much as 80% of your body weight.

Even with an injury running, hopping, shuffling, and simply walking can be done comfortably allowing you to return to your sport sooner than ever.

How Do Running Injuries Occur?

Most running injuries occur due to training overload—doing too much too soon. When the amount of running exceeds the body’s ability to handle the mileage, something pays the price. A short period of relative rest is typically recommended following an injury, and exercises should be introduced to strengthen the injured area.

When returning a runner to running, it is important to ramp up gradually. We can modify the distance and intensity of runs. Many times, however, runners have trouble returning to running by modifying these two factors alone. The Alter-G Antigravity Treadmill allows us to modify the impact forces of running and gradually increase them over time. This enables injured runners to stay in shape while gradually strengthening the injured area.

How Do I Get Started?

If you’re injured, it’s recommended that you meet with Dr. Sankey prior to running on the AlterG to ensure it’s the right thing for you. Given the all-clear, you will begin your first run on the treadmill. It might be recommended that you do some or all your runs for a certain time period on the AlterG.

  • Single Session: $50
  • 4 session package: $175
  • 8 session package: $325
  • 12 session package: $450

Once you and Dr. Sankey have mapped out your recovery plan you can book additional AlterG runs whenever is convenient for you. As you get comfortable with your starting “gravity level,” we will gradually increase your percent body weight until you can comfortably perform 100% weight bearing.

FAQs

How many runs on the AlterG does it take to recover from an injury?

The amount of time or number of runs it will take to return to 100% bodyweight running will depend on the severity of the injury. Our staff will work closely with you to develop a comprehensive plan.

Do I have to be a patient to schedule a run?

No. We have many people come in to solely use the AlterG Treadmill. If you are not working with one of our doctors currently, we will schedule a 15 minute complementary phone call to discuss a game plan.

Do I have to be injured to run on the AlterG?

No. Many of our patients and professional runners alike benefit from an occasional run on the AlterG. Incorporating an easy AlterG run at a lower percentage of your body weight is a great addition to a busy training plan. It allows you to maintain high mileage while minimizing stress on your joints.

What do I wear to run on the AlterG?

When running on the AlterG we have you put on a pair of snug fitting shorts over your clothing. Most people find wearing compression shorts or short running shorts to be the most comfortable under the AlterG shorts. You will also need your running shoes and a t-shirt.

I sweat a lot. Is that okay?

Yes! The AlterG shorts you wear are assigned to you and are professionally washed before anyone else wears them. We have fans surrounding the treadmill to keep the area cool. Showers and fresh towels are available as well!
