At TruMotion Therapy we are proud to offer our patients diagnostic ultrasound imaging services. Diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to create an image of the area being scanned. This allows Dr. Sankey to accurately diagnose musculoskeletal injuries providing or patients with certainty in their diagnosis and a treatment plan that will lead to them moving and feeling better.
Why Diagnostic Ultrasound?
Some common conditions that we have been able to diagnose with ultrasound and effectively treat include:
- Muscle strains: By identifying the severity of muscle strain we can help accurately gage the recovery timeline.
- Tendinitis vs Tendon Tear: Providing reassurance or encouraging caution is a benefit of visualizing the injured tissue.

Should I get an ultrasound or an MRI?
The benefits of ultrasound over MRI is ultrasound is cheaper, requires less time, can be done with movement, and can provide better fine detail with superficial structures.
Diagnostic Ultrasound has been shown to be comparable to the diagnostic accuracy of MRI when it comes to detecting rotator cuff tears.
MRI wins out over ultrasound when deeper structures within a joint or in the spine need to be visualized.
What conditions can a diagnostic ultrasound detect?
Diagnostic ultrasound can effectively diagnose tendinitis, muscle tears, ligament strains, bursitis, rotator cuff tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, and more. Having an accurate diagnosis allows our doctors to rule out mimickers. For example achilles tendintitis and achilles paratenonitis feel very similar but require different treatments. Ultrasound allows us to differentiate between the two.
